Concern
An individual expressed a general health symptom and believed the symptom may be associated with mold.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date(s) of Assessment: November 19, 2018

The media, media office, media office storage area, and the television studio were assessed.

The cleanliness of the spaces was acceptable.

The individual had just made lunch. An odor from the lunch was present.

No elevated moisture was detected within the carpet.

Temperature and relative humidity were acceptable.

Particulate samples were collected and were acceptable.

A thermal imagery screening was conducted. No thermal anomalies indicative of elevated moisture were observed.

No mold growth was observed.

Numerous stuffed animals were present in A81 and the adjoining storage closet.

Minor dust was present on the bookshelves in A81.

No concerns were identified with A81's Variable Air Volume (VAV) Box.

The media center is served by two Air Handling Units (AHUs) (AHU-3 and AHU-4).

Several filters had collapsed in AHU-4.

A box was being stored in AHU-3.

Corrective Actions
January 29th, 2019

Administration should make sure a plan is in place to regularly clean fabric materials such as stuffed animals.

January 29th, 2019

Administration can direct Custodial Services to dust the bookshelf in the media office more regularly.

November 20th, 2019

Building Services (HVAC) replaced the air filters that had collapsed and removed the item being stored within AHU-3.
