Concern
The admin office next to the admin conference room has yellow/orange marks on the wall near the floor on that wall behind the desk that are possibly from mold. A report was made that the room smells of mold too.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date(s) of Assessment: July 5, 2023

A brownish stain was observed on the drywall. The Office of the Environment attempted to clean with a disinfectant, however the material could not be removed.

Suspect mold growth was not observed. The stain resembled an oil/grease stain (possible associated with popcorn maker).

No moldy/musty odors were sensed within the space or in the direct vicinity of the stain.

No elevated moisture was detected.

No leaks were apparent above or below the drop-ceiling.

No plumbing lines were observed in the vicinity.

The cove base was well adhered, indicating moisture was not trapped behind the cove base.

The Office of the Environment requested Custodial Services attempt to clean/disinfect with an abrasive brush. Custodial Services reported the stain was not able to be removed.

The stain does not appear to represent a health and safety concern and can be left in place or the school can place a work order for the area to be re-painted.
