Concern
We found mold growth on the walls and bookshelves in a storage closet. We would like to save the bookshelves if possible.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date of Assessment: July 21, 2021

Approximately five square feet of mold growth (location sporadic, not continuous) was observed on the block within the closet.

The wooden shelving in the closet appeared stained and it was reported that custodial cleaning products were formerly stored within the closet. However, during the assessment, no materials were observed in the storage closet.

The staff member who removed the materials indicated no obvious mold growth on the stored items.

Areas above the drop-ceiling were assessed and no obvious moisture intrusion concerns were identified.

The adjoining classroom was assessed along the shared wall of the storage closet as well as above the drop ceiling. No moisture intrusion concerns were noted.

A data logger was placed within the space July 28, 2021. The data did not indicate sustained relative humidity above 70%. It is possible that the humidity was higher when the closet was used for custodial purposes (wet mops, buckets, stored cleaning products, etc.).

Corrective Actions
July 26th, 2021

A board-approved restoration contractor cleaned/disinfected the impacted areas on the block wall. After cleaning, the impacted areas were encapsulated. As a precaution, the wood shelving in the room was also cleaned/disinfected. The shelving in the room was also partially encapsulated. However, during the encapsulation it was reported that the shelving would be discarded.

August 31st, 2021

The school (Administration and/or Custodial) should monitor the space for mold growth and alert the Office of the Environment if the condition re-appears.
