Classrooms (Assess 2 to 3 per HVAC System Zone)
Check OK Comments
Condition
Room is free of dust and clutter
No
Two air cleaners (Instant AP100) were observed in room 115. The air cleaners have a function called plasma ion generator which charges (+/-) particles which can cause particles to attach to surfaces (including respiratory tract) or produce unknown by-products. Although the air cleaners have acceptable filters, the ion generator is not an acceptable feature. Although the ion generator option can be turned off, the Office of Environment recommends the units be removed from the building. The school system will be purchasing and deploying HEPA only air cleaners to each classroom in the near future. Portable 118 had several pieces of fabric materials (pillows, throw rugs, stools) which can contribute to allergen exposure or be more susceptible to mold growth under certain conditions (i.e. high relative humidity). More items for custodial staff to clean, if even cleaned (vacuum). School administration is to determine what serves an education purpose and what is to be removed from the school (i.e. non-issued or non-standard school furniture). A plug-in air freshener was detected and observed in portable 118. School administration is to inform staff air fresheners are not permitted because they can mask an odor of concern and/or be an irritant to others. The air freshener is to be removed from the school.
No stained or damage ceiling tiles
No
Water stained ceiling tiles were observed in cafeteria and room 175. If not already being addressed, school custodial staff is to submit a work order to Building Maintenance to evaluate, correct source, and replace ceiling tile.
No visible mold present (walls, cabinets, under sinks, behind posters)
Yes
Relative Humidity
Not above 70%
No
Dehumidifiers were found off in portables 113, 118, and 257. These portable were experiencing humidity levels from 68-73%. Each portable classroom received a dehumidifier to prevent mold growth due to the potential of extended elevated relative humidity being introduced into the portable as a result of operating the portable's HVAC fan mode to "on" as a COVID precautionary measure. Thus the fan setting will allow the HVAC unit fan to operate and introduce outdoor air 24/7 which can introduce elevated humidity pending weather conditions. The dehumidifier is to operate at least during non-school hours to break any elevated humidity trend. Teachers are to turn on/off the dehumidifiers after/before the school day. Custodial staff is to double check dehumidifiers after hours and turn "on" if found "off".
