Concern
The room has a strong odor. There is carpet that I believe to have mold. A general health symptom was reported.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date(s) of Assessment: October 12, 2018

A carpet odor was identified within the room.

No thermal anomalies indicative of moisture intrusion were identified.

No moisture was detected in the carpet.

No visible mold growth was observed.

Areas above the drop ceiling were assessed and were acceptable.

Building Services (HVAC) checked the operation of the unit. No major concerns were identified. The discharge air vanes within the unit were adjusted.

The odor may have been associated with building materials and room supplies which are influenced by expected fluctuations of indoor and outdoor air temperatures and humidity levels. The unit ventilators fan operates continuously during scheduled hours of operation. The ventilation unit will not be cooling or heating if the rooms thermostat is satisfied. As a result, if the room's temperature set point is satisfied and weather outdoors is damp/humid, the ventilation will introduce unconditioned air into the space. "Musty/mold" odors are often reported under these circumstances.
