We believe the source of the smell may be the 150 watt laser cutter so to investigate it we will need to operate that machine when you are here.
Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:
- interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
- inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
- inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
- inspection of exterior
- inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
The Office of the Environment visited the site during laser operation.
A distinct "burning/smoky" odor was identifed during the operation of the equipment.
The ductwork was reported to be former ductwork associated with dust collection (tech-ed).
During laser operation it was found that the duct used to exhaust from the operation was leaking in several locations. Air could be felt emanating from several of the joints in the ductwork. Additionally, the fan that came with the unit was placed on the ground near the machine. This configuration, positively pressurized the duct as the majority of the ductwork was "after" the fan. The fan should be placed as close to the outdoor exhaust location as possible so that the ductwork is negatively pressurized during fan operation.
The Office of the Environment recommended use of the machine be discontinued until an evaluation from a Professional Engineer. The Professional Engineer will create drawings/specifications for the installation of a local exhaust ventilation system specific to the laser cutters operation.
The drawings/specifications will be utilized for the installation of a new local exhaust ventilation system, pending funding availability.
