Concern
There is a strong musky smell that is present in this office. The team shared that it has been this way for a few years. I also am sensitive to mold, and I find when I am in my office for longer periods of time that my symptoms start to flare. I would like to have my office checked for possible mold.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date(s) of Assessment: April 25, 2025

The space was assessed during the early morning hours prior to the HVAC system diluting the space.

A "dull" carpet odor was observed when entering the space.

The carpet is damaged near the desk in the space and the carpet was easily able to be lifted up. The carpet odor identifed when entering the space intensified on the underside of the carpet when lifted up.

The assessor does not consider the odor encountered to be moldy/musty.

No mold or moisture concerns were observed under the carpet when it was lifted up.

Various surfaces were assessed for mold growth as a precaution. No visible mold growth was identifed.

A moisture meter was used to probe the drywall in the space. No elevated moisture was detected.

Areas above the drop ceiling were assessed:

  • No odors were identifed above the drop ceiling.
  • The supply ductwork was connected.
  • No signs of moisture intrusion (water staining, rust on roof decking, etc.) were identifed.

The odor encountered appears to be an odor associated with aging carpet. The odor is considered a nuisance. The Office of the Environment is not aware of any health and safety concerns associated a carpet odor.

Building Maintenance assessed the carpet due to the damage/delamination and plans to replace the carpet. See work order #61086 for details.
