Concern
Staff members reported that there is a mildewy/musty smell in Room 116 and they are concerned about the possible presence of mold. There was a leak in that classroom a couple of weeks ago.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date(s) of Assessment: February 28, 2025

A malodor was identifed when entering the space, however the odor was not considered moldy/musty.

The Office of the Environment was involved in the response to the recent leak. On January 27, 2025 the Office of the Environment determined the impacted materials from the leak to be dry following the placement of dehumidifiers and fans. Based on this and the odor not being a "moldy" odor, the historic leak is not believed to be the cause of the current malodor.

The carpet was probed with a moisture meter. No elevated moisture was identified.

The space was screened with a thermal infrared camera. No thermal anomalies indicative of moisture intrusion were identifed.

The carpet was scanned with an ultra violet flashlight in an attempt to identify a spill. A few di minimis stains were observed but none were associated with a malodor.

The ceiling mounted fan coil unit was opened and assessed. No malodors were identifed within the unit.

The supply diffusers were also assessed. No malodors were identifed emanating from the supply diffusers.

Various items within the space were assessed for malodors. Once the trash bag was removed from the metal trashcan, a "pungent" odor was identifed within the trash can.

Corrective Actions
February 28th, 2025

The trashcan was removed from the space. The custodian performed a cleaning of the trashcan. A new trashcan was provided to the space.
