  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)

  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Dates of Assessment:  February 21, 23, 24, and 28, 2023.

The school contacted the Office of Environment regarding a fish tank in science room 233 that leaked over the weekend.  Guidance office A121A was impacted with a few stained ceiling tiles and an isolated area of wet carpeting.  The casework on which the fish tank was placed was impacted by the water.

The Office of Environment assessed for impacted materials via visual and moisture monitoring equipment.  The assessment also included above the drop ceiling in A121A.  The office had a slight odor from the fish tank water setting on the carpet.

Custodial Services Carpet Cleaning crew extracted and dried the carpet on February 21.  The Office of Environment pull off the vinyl cove base at the bottom of the impacted casework and notified Building Maintenance to place and position air movers to assist with drying.  Building Maintenance was informed to remove a drawer to address the pan of the drawer (would swell, weaken, and/or retain an odor based on the material).

Air movers were to run after school hours since it disrupted class during school hours.

On February 23, office A121A carpet was dry and no odor within the office.  Ceiling tiles were replaced with exception to the one with a speaker in it.  The cabinetry in room 233 had spotty wet areas.  The drawer was returned and had a new pan.

On February 24, the cabinetry in room 233 still had moist spots, but drying (lower moisture readings).  Air blowers were to remain on over the entire weekend.

On February 28, all casework in room 233 was dry.

The above action is meant to prevent the potential for microbiological growth.  In addition, hard surfaces and impacted carpet were addressed with custodial services disinfectant product.
