Concern
A few months ago, the rooftop A/C unit failed and caused flooding in the little gym. During that incident, several gym mats were damaged.
This morning, the gym teacher discovered suspect mold on some of the remaining mats.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date of Assessment: September 23, 2026

The Office of the Environment observed visible mold growth and staining on the vinyl gymnasium mats.

Vinyl gymnasium mats are generally nonporous; however, mold growth may result in residual staining or discoloration that can persist after cleaning and may be mistaken for active mold growth.

Corrective Actions
September 23rd, 2026

The Office of the Environment cleaned the gymnasium mats using a disinfectant. Following cleaning, staining and discoloration remained visible on the mats.

September 23rd, 2026

School administration was informed of the cleaning performed and the residual staining and discoloration. To prevent staff and students from mistaking the remaining discoloration for active mold growth, the gymnasium mats were replaced.
