Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:
- interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
- inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
- inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
- inspection of exterior
- inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
General Information
On September 10, 2026, several concerns were brought to school administration regarding indoor environmental quality and potential health concerns associated with HVAC issues. These concerns included reports of smoke and burning odors on September 2, 2026, in the 500 and 600 wings of the school. The reported event was associated with a burning belt on Air Handling Unit #2 (AHU-2), which services these areas.
The Office of the Environment was requested to assess the affected areas during the September 2, 2026, smoke event.
September 2, 2026
At the time of the Office of the Environment's assessment, no visible evidence of smoke was observed. Several surface wipe samples were collected from areas including desks, chairs, and door frames. No visible evidence of soot was observed on the collected wipe samples.
Temperature, carbon dioxide (CO₂), and carbon monoxide (CO) measurements were collected in several areas. Temperature and carbon dioxide measurements were within acceptable ranges. Carbon monoxide measurements did not exceed 0.0 parts per million (ppm).
A faint burnt-rubber-like odor was noted at the beginning of the assessment. Staff opened exterior doors and used fans to increase ventilation and dilute the odor. By the completion of the assessment, the odor was no longer detected.
September 11, 2026
Several classrooms within the 500 and 600 wings were assessed, including Rooms 509, 511, 601, 604, 611, 619, 621, and 622.
No visible or olfactory indications of mold growth, soot, or smoke residue were observed within the assessed classrooms.
Temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide (CO₂), and carbon monoxide (CO) measurements were collected in each room and were within acceptable ranges. Carbon monoxide measurements did not exceed 0.0 parts per million (ppm).
The rooms were also assessed using a thermal imaging camera. No thermal anomalies suggestive of water intrusion were identified, with the exception of a stained ceiling tile in Room 619. A work order will be submitted to Building Maintenance to evaluate the area.
A photoionization detector (PID) was used to screen for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). No readings above 0.0 parts per billion (ppb) were observed.
Building Maintenance (HVAC) identified that the belt on the Air Handling Unit 2 (AHU-2) was incorrect sizing causing additional friction and heat resulting in the observed odor.
Building Maintenance (HVAC) cleaned residue off of pulleys and replaced belts with the correct size.
