Concern
The cabinet area under the sink in our art room had standing still water for over two days. Staff member has severe asthma and recently had more symptoms than usual which required her to be seen by her doctor. I would like for the area to be checked out for any possible mold growth due to the amount of moisture that was present. Thank you.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date of Assessment: April 29, 2026

Based on conversations with staff, it appears that a slow plumbing leak was present within the art classroom. Staff indicated that items were removed, cleaned, and put back. It is unclear how long the plumbing leak has been active.

The sink cabinet was inspected and found to contain plastic storage containers with lids, as well as plastic bowls used for painting and other art-related activities. The bottom of the cabinet was dry, and no moisture was observed within or around the stored containers.

No visible signs of mold growth or malodors were detected.

Moisture readings were taken along the sink cabinet kickplate using a moisture meter, and no elevated moisture was not identified.

As a precautionary measure, the interior of the sink cabinet was cleaned with a disinfectant.
