Concern
There are mold spots in various areas on the carpet.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date(s) of Assessment: August 16, 2024

The Office of the Environment visited the site and observed visible mold growth on the carpet within the classroom. 

The total area of visible mold growth was approximately ten square feet. 

It was reported that the custodian had cleaned the carpet, but the carpet did not dry properly.

The custodial staff will be re-cleaning all the carpet in the space as a precaution. 

Once the carpet is cleaned, fans will be placed on the carpet to facilitate proper drying.

Corrective Actions
August 16th, 2024

Custodial team removed furniture from space and disinfected the carpet. Carpet extraction was completed after disinfection. Fans were placed to assist with drying after the cleaning. 

August 19th, 2024

The Office of the Environment visited the site and did not observe visible and/or olfactory indicators of mold. A moisture sensor was used to determine if the carpet contained elevated moisture. Several areas were still wet. The Office of the Environment repositioned fans and blowers to dry wet areas. 

August 20th, 2024

The Office of the Environment visited the site to determine if carpeted areas were still wet with a moisture sensor. Elevated moisture was not identified within the carpet. 

August 26th, 2024

The Office of the Environment contacted Custodial Services regarding cleaning practices and the prevention of microbial growth. Custodial Services will be performing additional training with staff members preventative measures during cleaning activities.
