IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date(s) of Assessment: January 15, 2025

The Office of the Environment was requested to visit the site to collect carbon monoxide readings within Classroom 21. The concern was raised due to a recent emergency generator test.

Prior to entering the building, carbon monoxide (0.0 ppm), and carbon dioxide readings (433 ppm) were collected from the outside.

It was reported that exhaust from the weekly generator test may have gone into the classroom and caused an odor. No odor was present at the time of the reading collection. Although the odor was no longer present, the teacher was concerned that carbon monoxide may still be present.

Carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide readings were collected from the several locations in the classroom.

Carbon dioxide readings were not elevated and similar to the outside readings (408 - 501).

No carbon monoxide was detected in the space.

The Office of the Environment requested Building Maintenance alter the timing of generator testing to occur when the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system is not operational to avoid accidental entrainment of exhaust.
