Concern
Mold growth was observed on bulletin boards (around the chalk/white board) and on wood shelving (painted white) in storage closet within room 130 by the Office of Environment during the school's annual IEQ general assessment performed on July 22, 2022.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date of Assessment:  July 22, 2022

Mold growth was observed on the perimeters of bulletin boards associated with the chalk/white board and on wood shelving (painted white) in storage closet within room 130 by the Office of Environment during the school's annual IEQ general assessment performed (July 22, 2022).

Based on assessment of the room, the growth does not appear to be due to a present concern.  No other mold growth was observed on inspected surfaces within the room.  The bulletin board coverings were removed at end of school year which was covering up the mold growth.  Bulletin boards within the school were randomly inspected by ventilation zones.  No other bulletin boards were impacted.

The classroom felt slightly different as for thermal comfort (slight warmer) than others that were part of the assessment.  The room was 72.7 degrees Fahrenheit (F) with a relative humidity of 66%.  In general, although we like to see indoor relative humidity below 60% during the summer, it is not uncommon to be a little elevated during the summer break or under certain weather conditions.  We don't want to experience 70% or more for a continuous extended time (24/7 for approximately 10 days) since experience indicates mold growth is favorable under these conditions.

Corrective Actions
July 26th, 2022

Building Services Carpentry Shop removed the wood shelving and bulletin boards.  They provided school with details / measurements so the school can contact Purchasing Office and Warehouse for replacements (new bulletin boards and metal shelving).

Building Services HVAC Shop is to review the independent HVAC unit serving this classroom to ensure controls and equipment are properly operating.
