Upon coming into the classroom I am constantly coughing, congested and have frequent headaches.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date(s) of Assessment: August 31, 2023

The temperature 72.3 degrees Fahrenheit (F), the relative humidity (58.3%), carbon dioxide (495 parts per million (ppm), and carbon monoxide (0.0 ppm) were acceptable.

No odors were sensed.

Various surfaces (particular attention to music cases and wood surfaces) were assessed visible mold growth. No visible mold growth was observed.

Housekeeping was excellent.

No elevated moisture was detected in the carpet, drywall, backsplash (behind sink) or bases of cabinetry.

A drywall chase contained an access panel. No concerns or odors were identified within the access panel.

A single insect was observed stuck to a trap in the trash can. The Office of the Environment spoke with the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Department who was not aware of any significant concerns regarding pests at the facility. Given the excellent housekeeping practices, no other evidence of insect activity, and because only a single insect was observed, this finding would not represent a significant IEQ concern.

An air purifier was observed in the corner of the space.  The air purifier was noted to be directly next to the staff desk in the space.

Minor dust was observed on the return vent.

Areas above the drop ceiling were observed.

  • The supply diffusers were connected.
  • No odors were sensed.
  • No visible evidence of moisture intrusion such as water stains or suspect mold growth was observed.

The Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) unit that serves the space was assessed:

  • The unit was in operation.
  • The filters were in good condition and in place.
  • The drain pan and coils were acceptable.
  • The outside air dampers were open.

Corrective Actions
September 1st, 2023

The occupant could consider re-locating the air purifier away from the desk so that the outlet of the unit is not exhausting air in the direct vicinity of the occupant.

October 9th, 2023

Custodial is to clean the minor dust from the return vent.
