Odor concern.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Dates of Assessment: October 6 & 9, 2025

October 6, 2025

A fragrance was observed within the space. The custodian indicated that deodorizer was recently used in the space. The deodorizer had a fragrance similar to that of the main administrative office.

No visible mold was observed and no olfactory indications of mold were identified.

The carpet was probed with a moisture sensor. No elevated moisture was identified within the carpet.

The return in the office was observed to be ducted and did not appear to be creating a significant pressure differential.

The Office of the Environment planned to return to smoke test the return and evaluate if an odor was present once the fragrance from the deodorizer was diluted.

October 9, 2025

A dull carpet odor was observed within the space.

The return was smoke tested and found to be not creating a significant pressure differential. This lack of pressure differential could cause an observable change in the concentration of the nuisance odor.

The odor encountered appears to be an odor associated with aging carpet. The odor is considered a nuisance. The Office of the Environment is not aware of any health and safety concerns associated a carpet odor.

Corrective Actions
October 24th, 2025

Building Maintenance (HVAC) investigated the return and identified that a damper was 80% closed. The damper has been adjusted to open position.
