Concern
A general health symptom was reported during back to school night. A concern was raised that the mold identifed over the summer may be lingering.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)

Date(s) of Assessment: September 11, 2025

History

On July 29, 2025, the Office of the Environment was contacted regarding an leak caused by a loose fitting on the domestic hot water line in the Family and Consumer Science (FACS) classroom. While investigating the leak and coordinating drying activities mold growth was identifed within a drywall bulkhead. The mold impacted materials were removed and the wet building materials were either dried or removed. For additional information regarding those response actions, see IEQ Concern #CXFQMS202500035E.

Current Assessment

The Office of the Environment re-assessed the space in response to this concern.

The space is still being renovated (new cabinetry) in response to the July leak event. The classroom is partitioned  with plastic sheeting to separate the area where work is being completed from the remainder of the classroom.

Upon entering the space, it was observed that the plastic sheeting was not fully attached to the wall creating a nexus between general construction activities and the classroom.

The bulkhead where mold growth was formerly identifed was re-assessed. No concerns (mold growth, water staining, etc.) were noted on the newly installed drywall.

Several moisture readings were collected from existing wooden kickplates on cabinetry. No elevated moisture was detected. Many of the kickplates were newly installed.

No musty/moldy odors were encountered in the space.

Corrective Actions
September 11th, 2025

The Office of the Environment requested the contractor working on the cabinetry replacement re-secure the plastic sheeting to better separate the classroom space from the work area to prevent the migration of general construction dust. The contractor indicated they address on September 11, 2025.
