Concern
An individual expressed concern that air quality is dry in classroom.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date of Assessment: February 2, 2022

The room contains drywall and block walls with carpet and a drop ceiling. The Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system consists of a dedicated outdoor air unit (OAU-1) and a Fan Coil Unit (FCU).

The temperature in the room was 65.1 degrees Fahrenheit (and rising) during the early morning assessment (HVAC system just began operating).

Relative humidity would be considered low (17.0%), however this is typical for HCPSS schools during the winter due to low outdoor humidity. The ventilation system does not humidify air before introducing it to occupied spaces. Humidification can introduce clinical health conditions such as humidifier fever.

Areas above the drop-ceiling were assessed. No evidence of mold/moisture intrusion was observed above the drop ceiling.

No malodors were sensed within the space.

Various surfaces were assessed for the presence of relative humidity mold growth. None was observed.

The room was screened for thermal anomalies which could be indicative of moisture intrusion, air gaps, etc. No thermal anomalies were identified.

The supply diffusers (ceiling mounted) had minor deposits of dirt.

The carpet was probed with a moisture meter (grid like pattern throughout room). No elevated moisture was detected.

The OAU and FCU were operational at the time of the assessment.

The FCU was opened and assessed. The filters were in good condition. No concerns within the unit were identified.

The OAU was assessed, the filters, drain, and coils were in good condition. The outside air dampers were open. No concerns identified.
