Concern
Suspect mold on two bookcases.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date of Assessment: August 21, 2023

The Office of the Environment was contacted by custodial staff regarding suspect mold on wooden bookcases in Room 182.

Upon further review, the impact to the bookcases (two) was believed to be dusty water stained particle board. The integrity of the particle board where it makes contact with the floor was showing early signs of deterioration.

No elevated moisture was detected in the particle board. No visible water staining was observed on other nearby wooden furniture along the exterior wall (remainder of furniture consisted of plywood).

The particle board was cleaned with a disinfectant by the Office of the Environment as a precaution.

The cause of the water staining was not identified. It may be due to water from custodial floor care activities or an incidental spill that went unnoticed.

It should be noted that there is a Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) unit (baseboard heater) along the wall behind the bookshelf. Although no signs of leaking were observed (active, water staining, paint deterioration), Building Maintenance (HVAC) is investigating the possibility of the unit being the cause of the leak, particularly during the summer (condensation).

Additionally, the wall behind the bookshelf is an exterior wall. No signs of leaking or penetration of moisture through the wall were noted, however visibility is limited due to the baseboard heater.

Corrective Actions
August 21st, 2023

Custodial discarded the water damaged bookshelves.

August 30th, 2023

The Office of the Environment will visit the site on a rainy day to visually assess the exterior wall for moisture intrusion. If a leak is identified prior to this occurring, please place a work order for Building Maintenance to address.
