Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:
- interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
- inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
- inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
- inspection of exterior
- inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)

Temperature, relative humidity, and carbon dioxide readings were collected within the space. At the time of the initial assessment, the temperature was below the HVAC cooling set point; therefore, the system was not operating.
The carpet was assessed using a moisture meter, and no elevated moisture levels were identified.
The walls and ceiling were assessed using a thermal infrared camera. No thermal anomalies indicative of potential moisture intrusion were observed.
No visible or olfactory indications of mold growth were identified. A nuisance carpet odor was noted within the space.
The Office of the Environment returned to the area later in the day to determine whether the HVAC system was operating. A temperature of 77.0°F was recorded within the room, which is above the standard operating cooling temperature range of 72°F to 76°F.
Building Maintenance (HVAC) evaluated the Variable Air Volume (VAV) box serving the space through the Building Automation System (BAS). Space temperatures were found to be within the acceptable operating range, and no obvious deficiencies were identified.
Based on the assessment findings, it is likely that the initial temperature reading was collected before the VAV box initiated its cooling cycle.
Based on discussions with HVAC personnel, the filter within the return duct may be overloaded and restricting airflow. This condition could limit the dilution and removal of nuisance carpet odors.
The Office of the Environment is not aware of any health or safety concerns associated with the nuisance carpet odor.
