Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:
- interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
- inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
- inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
- inspection of exterior
- inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Date of Assessment: August 28, 2026
Students and staff were moved to a separate instructional area after symptoms of coughing and watery eyes were observed toward the end of the school day on August 27, 2026.
On August 28, 2026, the windows were opened and the Office of the Environment was contacted after a student informed staff that a vial of pepper spray had been accidentally released. The release was identified as the likely cause of the observed symptoms.
The Office of the Environment observed a noticeable stain in the area where the pepper spray was reportedly released. However, no odor associated with pepper spray or symptoms typically associated with pepper spray exposure were observed at the time of the assessment.
On August 31, 2026, staff observed no visible or olfactory signs of pepper spray and no symptoms consistent with pepper spray exposure.
Building Maintenance (HVAC) had air handling units (AHUs) that service the area operate over the weekend to flush out potential vapors originated from the pepper spray spill.
Custodial staff cleaned floors to remove any potential residue from the pepper spray spill.
