Strong odor coming from behind or underneath cabinet near refrig. on left when walking in to classroom. Pest control came out and placed an odor bag behind the refrigerator, but smell coming from behind or under cabinet.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date(s) of Assessment: January 10 and January 16, 2020

The area consists of two refrigerators, microwave oven, full cooking range, kitchen cabinets with pots and pans, dishes and other kitchen utensils stored in them.  The walls are masonry with acoustical tile ceiling.

The odor appeared to be emanating in the vicinity of two refrigerators and some kitchen cabinets.

The cabinets were probed with a moisture meter. No elevated moisture was detected and no mold growth was observed.

Building Services (Carpentry) removed some casework in the area of the odor to inspect behind the casework. No potential odor sources were identified.

Several food items were observed within the refrigerators, however the odor was not apparent within the units.

The refrigerator was removed from the wall and the back cover-plate was removed. The drain pan used to collect water from the freezers defrost cycle and from the cooling coils contained water and a biological-film/slime. This material gave off a strong odor consistent with the odor identified in the classroom.

Corrective Actions
January 16th, 2020

The two refrigerators were removed from the site. Due to age of the units, the refrigerators are to be replaced.
