Concern
On July 24, 2019, the Office of Environment observed mold growth on the edges of some student desks while performing a proactive inspection since there had been occurrences during the previous summers and the school is currently undergoing a ventilation renovation, interrupting the ability for the school to cool.
IEQ Investigation Process
Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:
- interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
- inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
- inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
- inspection of exterior
- inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings
Dates of Assessment: July 24, 31, and August 7, 14, and 22, 2019.
The perimeter classrooms of the two story portion of the building, includes the impacted rooms, were inspected weekly to ensure conditions and growth did not worsen.
The conditions remained unchanged. As a result, custodial staff cleaned and disinfected the student desks in the impacted rooms when the furniture was arranged for teachers.
This area will receive proactive inspections next summer. The HVAC system will not be operational next summer due to the next phase of renovation.
