The main hallway outside of the media center and room has a mold/mildew smell.
IEQ Investigation Process

Identify deficiencies that may impact IEQ and/or sources of odor concerns. Typically includes the following depending on the nature of concern, but not limited to:

  • interview/questionnaire of concern individual(s)
  • inspection above drop ceiling (condition of roof deck, pipe insulation, return air plenum)
  • inspection of ventilation system (operation of variable air volume box and outdoor air dampers, check controls, measurements of carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity, sources near outdoor air intake, measure return and supply air volume, cleanliness of coils, liner and condensate pan)
  • inspection of exterior
  • inspection below drop ceiling (housekeeping, sink and floor drain traps, signs of past and present moisture concern via visual and/or moisture meter, mold growth, ensure connection of current and capping of abandoned sanitary vents, odorizers, excessive plants and fabric items, identify potential pathways, and measure volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and lighting)
Findings

Date(s) of Assessment: November 27, 2019 and December 5, 2019

November 27, 2019

A slight musty odor was momentarily sensed, however this odor was strongly over-shadowed by a strong cleaning agent smell emanating from the nearby bathrooms (doors left open). Due to the masking, an odor source was not identified.

The area was scanned with a thermal imaging camera. No thermal anomalies indicative of moisture intrusion were observed.

Several areas above the drop-ceiling were assessed (throughout the hallway). No odors or mold/moisture intrusion concerns were identified.

The cove base was peeled back in several areas within the main hall. No mold growth was observed on the backside of the cove base.

Lockers 282-298 and 353-370 were opened and assessed for an odor. No malodors were detected within the lockers.

The Roof Top Unit serving the space was assessed. No odors were identified within the unit. The outside air dampers were open.

December 5, 2019

No odors were sensed during the assessment.

A non-invasive moisture meter was utilized to determine if elevated moisture was present underneath the floor tile in the main hallway. No elevated moisture was detected.

Staff members in the area report the odor has not been sensed recently.
